Chauliodus danae Regan & Trewavas, 1929

Diagnosis: dorsal fin moderately distant from head, its origin over eighth to eleventh photophore in lateral series; length from snout to dorsal fin origin 24-33% (usually 26-28%) SL. Colour: iridescent silver-grey. Size: to about 150 mm SL.

Habitat: deep oceanic waters to more than 1,000 m depth; may migrate to near-surface waters at night; common in its main range. Food: fishes and crustaceans. Reproduction: oviparous; spawns year around, with peak in spring.

Distribution: northward to 60° N- in Atlantic, most abundant between 20° and 40° N; not in Mediterranean. Elsewhere, southward to 10° N.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. Grey, 1955b: 277-278.
